Garth Thomas attended Trinity College from 1960 to 1967. He is a Financial Planner who has earned several certificates, designations and distinctions during a lifelong career in the financial services sector of Trinidad & Tobago.
Following graduation from Trinity College, Garth had a stint in the public sector after which he served as the Executive Director of Trinidad & Tobago Youth for Christ between 1972 and 1976. There, he honed the training and coaching skills that would serve him in good stead over the course of his professional life. In 1976, he embarked on a sales career in the life insurance industry where he found abundant opportunity to expand his experience as a trainer. A past president of the Trinidad & Tobago Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors (TTAIFA), he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2007. He has distinguished himself as an insurance salesman, having won numerous company and industry awards locally and regionally. In addition, he has achieved similar accolades in the arena of mutual fund sales where, as an agent of the Trinidad & Tobago Unit Trust Corporation, he was honoured as the top agent for eleven years.
Garth’s competencies have led him to develop a number of training programs in the area of sales, personal financial planning, customer relations, presentation skills and team building. These programs are marketed through his company, Comprehensive Planners and Associates Limited to a very impressive list of clients in the business sector.
He is a member of The International Forum for Social Innovation based in Paris, France and of the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) in the USA. He is also a member of the Dynamic Speakers Toastmasters Club and has been a regular presenter at their International District 81 Conference in the Caribbean over the last four years. He holds the designations Advanced Communicator Gold (ACG) and Competent Leader (CL) from Toastmasters.
Despite such a wide range of professional and business interests, Garth has consistently been an activist for the welfare of the Trinity College community. He has served on the Trinity College Alumni Association executive for many years and held the position of President on multiple occasions. Critically, he has been a reliable fundraiser and economic contributor to the College over his adult years.
A believer in the awesomeness of the human potential, he sees himself as a human ‘becoming’ and his life mission is to become the best he can be by helping others to become the best they can be.
The Trinity College Alumni Association acknowledges the achievements of Garth Thomas as an Entrepreneur, Financial Planner, and a dedicated servant of the Trinity College community and readily admits him into its Hall of Fame.
