Mr Robert Riley attended Trinity College from 1969 to 1976. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and a Bachelor of Laws degree and an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the University of the West Indies. He also holds a Legal Education Certificate from the Council of Legal Education.

After serving as an Associate Attorney at J D Sellier & Company for almost 4 years, Robert moved to BP Amoco (Trinidad) in 1990 where he worked for approximately five years as an Attorney specializing in Legal & Government Affairs. Robert left BP Amoco in 1995 for BWIA as its General Counsel and Corporate Secretary but stayed only one year returning to BP Amoco in 1996 as Vice President – Legal & Government Affairs. In 2001 he was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BPTT. During his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of BPTT, he grew the Company from a fledgling gas producer into a large integrated Energy Organization producing not only gas but Methanol and LNG. He also transformed the Company’s performance and successfully developed a cadre of competent nationals capable of successorship on his departure. In recognition of his contribution to national development, he was awarded Trinidad and Tobago’s Chaconia Gold Medal in 2003.

Under his leadership, he ingrained a culture of safety into BPTT and was consequently appointed Group Head of Safety & Operations Risk by the BP Group in 2010 in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. His mandate was to support BP’s global efforts to improve its safety and operational risk performance. He developed the charter and vision for the function and led the transformation of BP’s Operations Management System. Over the next five year, BP was credited with significant and continuous improvement in personal safety and process safety operations performance.

Robert left BPTT in 2015 and founded the London-based firm known as Robert Riley Leadership & Energy Consulting Limited where he is Executive Director. The Firm which has clients internationally focuses on leadership assessment and development, leadership training, performance improvement and management.

A proud and supportive alumnus of Trinity College, Robert’s mission is to use his global leadership and business management experience to improve leadership development, standards of financial delivery, safety performance and ethics in business and government in emerging markets and developing countries.

The Trinity College Alumni Association acknowledges the achievements of Robert Riley as a Corporate Leader who has significantly impacted development in the energy sector and readily admits him into its Hall of Fame.
