Brigadier General Ancil Wayne Antoine attended Trinity College from 1965 to 1971 and went on to join the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force where he served with the highest distinction for approximately 39 years. During the period January 26, 2002, to June 30, 2006, General Antoine served as Trinidad and Tobago’s eighth Chief of Defence Staff.

Significant achievements during his tenure included:

  • The deployment of the Trinidad and Tobago’s Joint Support Group to Grenada which provided humanitarian relief and security in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.
  • The establishment of the Trinidad and Tobago Air Guard.
  • The re-naming of the Volunteer Defence Force (VDF) as the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Reserves.

Brigadier General Antoine also served as Commander of the CARICOM Battalion deployed to Haiti as part of the United States-led ‘Operation Restore Democracy’.

On July 1, 2006, Brigadier General Antoine was elected as the first-ever Director General of the Inter American Defence Board (IADB), a post he retained until June 30, 2012, just prior to his retirement.
